Sooooo, writing these gift guides has been incredibly bad for my bank balance… And I can’t seem to stop treating myself to all these little gifts… But, in the interests of research, I am selflessly continuing my quest! We still have 36 days before Christmas, so plenty of time to pick up some more little treats for the ones that you love.

Hibiscus Flowers in Syrup –

I’ve featured these before in previous cocktail posts because I really love how much these little beauties can elevate a simple gin and tonic or glass of prosecco. They make a fantastic stocking stuffer (my mum first introduced them to me at Christmas last year) and deserve a spot on everyone’s bar cart!

Burleigh Pink Gin –

A limited edition bottling of Burleigh’s London Dry Gin, this beautiful pink bottle contains their classic recipe with the addition of hibiscus (perfectly pairs with those hibiscus flowers we were just talking about), Japanese cherry blossom, pink grapefruit and rose flowers. Mandolin –

I have wanted a decent mandolin for the longest time. Make all those slicing and dicing chores effortless with this one from Oxo. But, for the love of your fingers, please don’t forget to invest in a protective glove.

Pestle and Mortar –

Can you even call yourself a ‘real’ foodie if you don’t own a pestle and mortar? Our wooden one gets a fair amount of use, but I would love a hefty stone number like this one from Chef Sofi. Great for grinding your own seasonings, classic curry pastes (Red Thai curry is a personal favourite) or whipping up creative marinades with garlic and fresh herbs.

Copper Measuring Cups –

If you know me then you’ll know that these feature on her because they are copper-coloured. But I refuse to apologize for it. Why can’t kitchen implements be pretty? This is a useful little stocking stuffer, as pretty as it is practical.

Herb Planter –

Despite the fact that I seem to have whatever the opposite of a ‘green thumb’ is (a ‘black thumb’ maybe? What a horrible thought…) I still love the idea of growing my own herbs to cook with. The ones that I use most frequently anyway – coriander (cilantro for my lovely American readers), mint, basil etc.

Could this aquaphoric hydroponic herb planter be the answer to my problems? It automatically waters my thirsty herbs and then lets me know when it is time to top up!

Wine Advent Calendar –

Like the beauty ones I suggested in my previous gift guide – you can treat your little foodie (or in this case your oenophile) to a present that keeps giving all the way through December. This Wine Advent Calendar features 24 wines, with a great variety of whites, reds, sparkling and rose options, and even a port. Just try not to drink them all at once! Like many foodies, one of my favourite past times is eating out. I love trying new restaurants, food trucks, pop-ups, food events etc. Finally someone has created the perfect journal for recording all these culinary adventures. A place to make notes, keep business cards, rate your experience, favourite dishes etc.

Kitchen Confidential, Anthony Bourdain –

The foodie and travel worlds mourned together the loss of Anthony Bourdain earlier this year. Keep those flames of inspiration ignited with one of his best-selling classics, now recently updated; ‘Kitchen Confidential’. Spilling secrets with wild-but-true tales of his life and experiences in  the culinary world.

Seasoning salts –

Up their seasoning game with these seriously fancy finishing salts. Six luxurious flavours including saffron salt and truffle salt take every dish to the next level. I like to use the porcini mushroom salt on my risotto and the truffle salt on my popcorn, but the possibilities are endless.

I think I’ve left the best until last. Brunch-ing at Captain’s Kitchen

Brunch-ing at Captain’s Kitchen

If you’ve been following along for a while you might already be aware that brunch is one of my favourite past times. It really is the perfect excuse for a weekend get together with friends – is it breakfast? Is it lunch? Who cares? It’s delicious, and it comes with mimosas! Count me in! 

 

Ever since their opening in January of this year, I had heard so many good things about Captain’s Kitchen and was determined to try it out for myself – so I hopped on the ferry and headed to Tortola this weekend, motivated by tempting brunch morsels and the possibility of a Bloody Mary once I reached the restaurant. I wasn’t disappointed!

 

I had read that the restaurant is small and that reservations are recommended, so we made sure to call in advance. It is also worth noting that parking is very limited in Macnamara, the residential area where Captain’s Kitchen is located, so car-pooling might be an idea.

 Brunch was beautifully varied with a great menu and a fabulous specials board. There was a good selection of items including vegan and gluten free options. Everything is farm fresh and most dishes seem packed with different fruits and veggies. Definitely a chance to get in your 5-a-day!

All three on our table decided to order from the daily specials and we eagerly awaited our dishes, while we enjoyed a couple of mimosas and the view from their deck. The deck does benefit from those natural BVI breezes, but being September it was warm up there and I would have loved it if there had been a couple of ceiling fans to help circulate the air when the breeze died. 

 

Our meals arrived and I was thrilled with my choice; asparagus salad with roasted vegetables topped with poached eggs and drizzled with hollandaise sauce, garnished with beautifully ripe avocado and pieces of fresh fruit. I also opted for a cheeky side of bacon… Chef Fiona can tell you all about the local suppliers that she gets her vegetables, herbs, salad leaves and fruit from. Each item sourced locally in the BVI, mostly organic.

The Chia pancakes (vegan but with optional side of bacon) and the fish burger (made with Bangamary fish) were also declared delicious and polished off enthusiastically.

 I look forward to updating this post with other dishes as I try them, as that certainly won’t be my last visit! I’ll be bringing my swimsuit too for a dip in their pool!
